In this review, we were lucky enough to test out Duck Camp Co’s line of ‘Better in Bamboo’ hoodies. Coming in the original style, as well as a new lightweight design, these were some of the most comfortable, functional sun hoodies we’ve ever tried. From Australia to Colorado, we’ve put these through the test of water, wind, and fire (well…the sun), and couldn’t be happier with the results.

The Duck Camp Co ‘Better in Bamboo’ hoodie line is a game-changer. Available in the original styles, as well as the Lightweight fits, these hoodies are a new permanent staple to our fishing bags (That is, if they’re not already on our shoulders).

There are a few things that really catch my interest when it comes to purchasing new gear, specifically apparel; does it have a hood? Does it come in Camo? Is it soft? Is it functional? Let’s just say these hoodies met all the right criteria (and then some).

As soon as we put on the original bamboo hoodie, the first thing we noticed was the material. A buttery soft, yet somewhat thick bamboo material, unlike anything else I had in the closet. You can tell there was some extra effort spent into the detail of the hoody. From the drawstrings to the actual cut of the shirt, and obviously patterns – bringing a pretty unique camo into the game, this hoodie had all I needed to get on board. In terms of fit, I’m 5’11 185 and the large sizes in both the lightweight hoodie and the original fit my frame perfectly.

The first trip we brought these hoodies on was to Australia – we spent 2 weeks traveling all over the country fishing for some pretty insane species with our friends from AussieFlyfisher and Tourism Australia. We spent the first week in the remote Wessel Islands – which if you haven’t heard of and you are reading this, do a quick google maps search, the place is remote, and literally at the very tip of Northern Territories Australia.

Weather was tough on this trip and we battled through heavy rainstorms on multiple days. We spent the majority of our fishing days in the original hoodies and for a functional fishing shirt, they are awesome. The thicker material was little slow to dry, and a little heavy for the super hot days on the water, but luckily we were also carrying the new Lightweight Bamboo Hoodies in our arsenal.

With these, we were able to enjoy a hot day under the sun in a more breathable fit. Made with the same bamboo material, these hoodies offered us a lightweight alternative without compromising the durable makeup of the original bamboo hoodies. While I particularly liked the River Rock green color, they, unfortunately, don’t come in the same camo pattern that we love on the original (not yet, at least. hint hint Duck Camp). However, at least the lightweight crewnecks come in a sweet early season wetlands camo.

A few weeks later we set out to go shoot the Salmon Fly Hatch in Idaho with Teton Valley Lodge. This was where the lightweight hoodie really had a chance to shine. Under the waders, the soft, lightweight fabric was a perfect layer for on the drift boat, and spending hours wading through tough currents in search of big hungry trout.

This summer we also had our chance to make it out to Colorado, where the buttery smooth design was the perfect complement to long days spent drifting under the sun. We don’t know if the breathability of the bamboo material influenced our performance, but we sure as hell can’t confirm it didn’t!

In all, there isn’t really anything we have to say against these. The original hoodies, available in red, blue, and a plethora of camo colors, were the perfect cover-up for days spent under the sun and against the wind. On the other hand, the new lightweight additions, available in River Rock, Grey, and Yellow, were a great mid-summer addition to the bamboo line, as they were the perfect way to protect yourself against the sun, while still providing one of the lightest feels a sun hoodie has ever had.
