We’ve got some great news coming out of the Sunshine State this morning. Yesterday afternoon, the US Army Corp of Engineers released their finalized framework for the future of Lake Okeechobee water management and releases. In recent years, poor water management has left the waterways downstream of the lake in a state of peril, with toxic algae blooms occurring with increased frequency. This announcement from the Corp is a sure sign of progress and a testament to the important work the folks at Captains for Cleanwater have been doing to protect their fishery. The new LOSOM guidelines are expected to take effect in 2022.

According to Captains for Clean Water, the new plan is estimated to:

  • Reduce lake-triggered harmful discharges to the Caloosahatchee by 37%.
  • Reduce total flood control releases from the lake to St. Lucie by 37%.
  • Send over 3x more water south to the Everglades!

You can learn more about the new LOSOM updates in the Instagram post below and in this article from NBC2-Fort Meyers!
