In this week’s “How to Tie” video feature, Fly Fish Food gives us a great tutorial on how to tie the Duracell Jig Nymph.

Learn About This Fly:

Difficulty: Novice

This week, we will be learning how to tie the Duracell Jig Nymph. For those of you who know of this fly, you understand it’s uncanny effectiveness when it comes to drifting flies for trout. Originally pioneered by Scottsman, Craig McDonald, the Duracell Jig Nymph has seen a meteoric rise to fame within the euro/ tight line angling community.

“No fly is stronger longer”, a slogan originally coined for the brand that the fly subsequently received its name from, perfectly encapsulates the energy of this pattern. By mixing in all the elements that make a nymph (specifically one designed for tightening) effective, this fly drifts through the current with the perfect balance of color, shine, and movement. The brown, ice dubbing body along with the red wire segmentation delivers an enticing, yet somewhat realistic color presentation, all while shining bright to grab the attention of any bedded down fish. These features, along with the CDC collar, which creates just the right amount of movement to seal the deal, make this fly an irresistible snack to any unlucky fish.

Often times, when we see a handful of tying tools in a video, we’re quick to try to figure out whether it’s all really necessary. Our conclusion for this fly: Yes…and No. While chip clips and a carefully placed index finger can take the place of a rotodubbing twister, and a Petitjean Magic Tool Set (say that 3 times fast), in the long run, you’re most likely going to be tying a few of these flies + variations. So, it may be in your best interest to just get the recommended tying gear and save yourself some frustration.
